Hitachi Folk Karuta Rules

1.Background
Each Karuta game takes place on a court.
Each team has three players and teams compete against each other in a round robin style in order to qualify for the semifinal and final stage of the tournament.
2.Preparation
The referee divides the 56 Karuta cards into 2 piles.
The cards are shuffled and then placed on the game board face-down, which is in the middle of the court.
The teams sit on either side of the court with the team leader sitting in the middle.
Rock- paper- scissors is played to determine which pile of cards will be placed on either side of the court.
The team that wins rock- paper -scissors chooses first.
The cards are placed face up on the court with 15 cards on the top row and 13 cards on the bottom row. The losing team does the same with their cards.
The cards must be 3 cm apart and the cards on the bottom rows of the court must be 10 cm away from the player’s knees.

■ When the last two playing cards are lefts
The reader reads the two remaining cards aloud, and the players must confirm they are correct. After confirmation, the remaining two playing cards are placed in the center (marked red) with a 30 cm space between them. The team leader (the center of each team) plays on behalf of the team. (The two cards must be placed so that each card faces each player) The player who takes the first one also takes the other one.
・When the number of reading cards do not match the number of cards on the court
→ There are more than two cards
・The extra cards are collected by the referee
→ There are less than two cards
・Two cards are prepared and continue
・When both two cards are wrong
→ Collected by the referee and the correct ones are prepared

■When both team tie
The playing card “り” serves as a trump card (=joker) in this case, so the team which has this card is the winner. If the trump card is kept by the referee, both team leaders play rock-paper-scissors for a single round.
■Notice for a referee
① Before the game, the referee gives the playing cards a good shuffle and divides them in two piles, each consisting of 28 cards, then places them in the center of the court face-down.
② When the players have a seat, the referee confirms their team’s name and fills in the recording sheet.
③The referee has to raise his hand when :
(The referee must keep his hand raised until the matter has been resolved.)
(The referee leader will come to the referee.)
●There are some inconvenient things such as reader’s voice, injury, quarrel and so on.
●Plural people touch the card at the same time (ref. the list)
※In one game, “rock-paper-scissors” to decide the matter above up to
three times (time limit)
The same time “rock-paper-scissors” is done by two people and the referee calls their names.
※No one touches the card when the reader reads the card twice.
(The referee has to raise his hand immediately. And when the card is taken, he has to put his hand down.)
④After the game, the referee puts the result down on the recording sheet and hands it to the recorder.
Write which team got the “joker” by ○or × on the recording sheet.
(The recorder will collect it.)
